Game of Fishing

Stencilling

The stencil saves a shape, it doesn't save the moment.

Painting of a large blue fish wrapped in pale figures and red looping lines, below a red band with the painted letters 'LMSTREALTTU.' and a row of black crows, a small boat at the left.

Harbor

Painting of overlapping ducks with open beaks and lifted feet, repeated at different scales across a layered, looping ground.

Side Vision

Painting of a long red goat with tall horns and four round eyes, carrying a row of small black birds and a larger overlapping bird on its back.

Red Goat

Misstep

Painting of overlapping figures and fish-like shapes, with bent limbs and outstretched hands crossed by looping outlines on a peach-coloured ground.

Game of Fishing

Painting of two upright forms linked by a long horizontal shape, crossed by looping outlines and small hand-like marks.

Duck Time 1

Duck Time

This work builds a small, dirty test machine where repeatable structures become variable bodies and where absence acts.

Duck Time 5

Duck Time 4

Duck Time 3

Duck Time 2

Duck Time 1

Painting of several overlapping dark fish-like forms against a turquoise field, threaded onto taut horizontal cords through round green eyelets, with bright red fin-like marks and looping green lines.

Fished

Painting of a frontal, crowned bird figure - a spiky crown over a single round eye, a long beak reaching to a small orb, broad outspread wings and long splayed legs arching beneath a round central body. A large letter C curves around the body, and a letter sits in each corner - E, E, M, H.

Martlet

Painting of a dense lattice of dark tree silhouettes screening a luminous lakeside sunset reflected in the water below, across seven horizontal planks that a duo reads as foreground and background, translated into sound.

Nile

The Riverscape

A research project questioning the roles of composer and performer: graphical river scores (Danube, Nile, Ganges, Los Angeles) realised as recorded compositions.

Painting of the Danube sighted from above and abstracted to a map - floodplain, water and the blocks of a town, divided into five numbered horizontal bands read, top to bottom, as the flow of time in a musical score.

Danube

Painting of the Ganges delta abstracted from above - a branching network of channels threading through dense vegetated land and dissolving into open water, divided into five horizontal bands that double as a graphical score.

Ganges

Painting of the Dominguez Channel and the Port of Los Angeles seen from above - a grid of docks, roads and circular storage tanks cut by the dark diagonal of the channel, framed and divided into five horizontal bands that serve as the score's flow of time.

Los Angeles Port

Painting of the Nile sighted from above and abstracted to a map - desert giving way to clustered circular pivot-fields and a patchwork of cultivation, the river threading the lower of its five horizontal bands, read top to bottom as a musical score's flow of time.

Smashed Mosquito 2

Rust and Renewal

A series of paintings made with fragments of broken umbrellas and iron filings that rust into the paint over time - the oxidation itself completing the work.

Painting of a rusted, iron-oxidised plate in which umbrella ribs splay from a single joint like the skeleton of a horse, Chinese anatomical labels naming the bones and amino-acid formulae scrawled in the corner - a mock natural-history specimen of decay.

The morphology of Ma

Painting of a mosquito collapsing into a fan of broken umbrella ribs, its body bleeding downward and thin black legs splaying across the scratched, iron-flecked surface.

Smashed mosquito

Painting of a small tree sprung from dark earth, its branches a cluster of umbrella ribs with glowing leaves caught among the sticks, on a speckled, textured field.

Umbrella Tree

Painting of a broken black umbrella fallen open in a luminous field beneath an overcast sky, its bent frame and curved handle splayed wide, a patch of light glowing at its side.

Umbrellas

Painting of a bare winter grove - slender trees scratched into the surface and grown from embedded umbrella ribs, each tagged with a small numbered label, standing above a cold band of reflecting water.

Umbrella forest

Painting of a giant mosquito on a textured, iron-flecked ground; its veined wings and dark body bleed into the surface, its legs resurrected from umbrella ribs and a rusting rod embedded in the paint.
